Whether red or blue, it would be good to see the 24-year old Sydney native on a production-derived bike. What might one of few Aussies to have landed in Europe recently choose? The feeling is that Ducati will keep Michael Ruben Rinaldi alongside Alvaro Bautista, while there are various candidates for GRT, from Axel Bassani to Dominique Aegerter.         We barely have time to publish this article and next year&rsquo;s MotoGP takes yet another new turn. A door to the top class may open for Augusto Fernandez, partly because he&rsquo;s on track to score the Moto2 title, but also for another important reason, in that Remy Gardner may leave his Tech3 KTM to somebody else. Remy Gardner and MotoGP: "Every race, an injury"  The Australian himself had this to say after his umpteenth crash and subsequent after-effects. That was at Barcelona, with nine of the 2022 races already completed. The current Moto2 champion is clearly not happy with his performance as a MotoGP rookie. In fact, if we look at the standings after Silverstone and prior to Austria, Remy places almost last, with only team-mate Fernandez having done worse. Gardner has 9 points, the Spaniard 5. Stefan Bradl, Michele Pirro and Lorenzo Savadori all have zero, but they are test riders who are focused on other things rather than their position in the championship. Considering he&rsquo;s just 24, Gardner would prefer to avoid damaging a career that has already proved so promising. Hence, his manager is talking to various teams in the intermediate class. And if they were to find a seat, this would mean that there would be a vacancy in Herv&eacute; Poncharal&rsquo;s garage, which could well be filled by another Spaniard. Augusto Fernandez, listen to us!  First he&rsquo;ll need to win the title and then comes the step up in category. As we&rsquo;ve said, Augusto is highly regarded by MotoGP teams, but it remains to be seen whether the top class has room for him. Only if he were to lift the Moto2 trophy come the end of the year, and if a spot were to become available at Tech3. Because we know that Raul Fernandez will move to Aprilia RNF, and now we know that Remy Gardner is in doubt. In fact, we&rsquo;d go as far as to say that the Australian already has one foot out the door, as it would take a miracle for him to remain in 2023. By which we mean an incredible result. Something that, for now, doesn&rsquo;t look to be on the horizon in Austria, which will take place at the Red Bull Ring, the home track of KTM. Next year&rsquo;s factory squad will comprise Brad Binder and Jack Miller, while Pol Espargar&ograve; will return to Tech3, alongside new arrival Augusto. All the riders love it, not least Remy Gardner, an Australian who is &ldquo;used&rdquo; to tracks overlooking the sea. The KTM Tech3 rider draws a comparison to help describe the atmosphere: "A beautiful track, it really is. It reminds me of Phillip Island in some ways. But here it&rsquo;s about 25&deg; hotter". The current Moto2 champion explains the difference in climate: "In Australia we race when it&rsquo;s cold, but here at Mandalika it&rsquo;s insanely hot. That aside, both tracks are technical and demanding. We&rsquo;ll see how it goes, but I feel ready for the challenge&rdquo;. Remy&rsquo;s injured hand is improving  Among other things, not least the move from the middle to the top class, Gardner has also faced a challenging winter as he adapts to the new bike. The injury he sustained over the winter seems to be water under the bridge, or almost: "My wrist is improving, in fact I rode well in Qatar. The Lusail race was my first in MotoGP and my sensations were positive, though I&rsquo;m not yet 100%". Remy&rsquo;s aim is to grow consistently: &ldquo;Yes, we need time and miles. We&rsquo;ll get there step by step. The RC16 has great potential, I&rsquo;m working hard to understand its reactions. And I&rsquo;m also learning more about the tyres. Things are going well, as I&rsquo;ve said, the aim is consistent growth". The toughest part of the weekend regards the securing of grid positions: "Qualifying is insane, the bike expresses incredible lateral forces, in acceleration and braking, and the rider is pretty stressed. The speeds are incredible, especially when you put fresh tyres in. It&rsquo;s crazy&rdquo;.         Day two of testing at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, reserved for test riders and rookie MotoGP riders, saw Tech3 duo Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez in action with just one goal &ndash; to continue their apprenticeship aboard the KTM RC16, very different to the Moto2 bikes they are used to riding. The Spaniard rounded out the day in fourth place, after completing 55 laps, while the Australian, still not fully fit following injury this winter, lies sixth after putting together 43 laps. Gardner: "I&rsquo;m starting to feel comfortable on the bike"  "This second day has been very positive", states a visible satisfied Remy. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m starting to feel comfortable on the bike after making a few changes. All in all I&rsquo;m pleased, although I&rsquo;m still suffering over long distance due to my injury. But we needed these tests to try some different solutions, so I&rsquo;m not pushing too hard or taking any unnecessary risks, instead I&rsquo;m trying to have fun on the bike. I can&rsquo;t wait to get back on the track&rdquo;. Fernandez: "I&rsquo;m adapting to the bike without turning it upside down"  The Spaniard has opted for a different strategy to his team-mate as he adapts to the bike: "I&rsquo;m continuing to get to grips with the bike and we&rsquo;ve worked well on day two, completing many laps and understanding more about certain aspects. I think the right approach for a rookie rider like me is not to turn the bike upside down, but to ride as much as possible, focusing on myself.         KTM is ready for a relaunch in 2022. With the championship just around the corner and team presentations already underway, the Austrian manufacturer has high hopes for the season. Not only with regard to its factory team, but also its Tech3 line-up. Herv&eacute; Poncharal&rsquo;s team will field the two most promising rookies on the grid, Moto2 world champion Remy Gardner and runner-up Raul Fernandez. Gardner - Fernandez: no shortage of talent  But will the two young KTM talents prove to be a winning bet? Both have the goods on paper of course. Australian Gardner has recently secured the Moto2 title and&nbsp;let's not forget that Fernandez, second in the 2021 standings, was able to achieve this result in what was his rookie Moto2 season, fighting for the title from start to finish. This could bode well for him in MotoGP. The Spaniard has shown he is quick to adapt to change and he was immediately quick in initial testing at Jerez despite it being his first outing with the MotoGP bike. Raul is clearly not short on talent. And the same goes for Gardner who, unlike Fernandez, is a more mature rider and can also boast a certain level of experience, having competed in Moto2 for six seasons. This will clearly be useful when it comes to his work in the garage and his approach to the new team. With so many young riders in its ranks, KTM is spoiled for choice  We&rsquo;ve come to understand the KTM strategy over the years, the manufacturer clearly focusing on young riders and all that is new. And so it's equally clear that both Raul and Gardner could also represent the future for the factory team (already in 2023), stepping in to replace Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira. The two factory riders didn&rsquo;t put together the kind of season that KTM expected in 2021, and so this coming season will be the year of truth. If the pair fail to power the RC16 to the front and round out the year close to the top of the standings, they will have no chance of retaining their rides with the Austrian manufacturer. With a view to 2023, Beirer himself has said that no one is safe and that KTM will need to either renew or change up its contracts for both the factory squad and the Tech3 team. And the two most likely substitutes for the factory team are of course Gardner and Fernandez. Although Pedro Acosta may also be on the horizon, ready to mix things up and perhaps enter the running for a factory KTM ride already in 2023. The young Spaniard won the Moto3 title in 2021 and will compete in Moto2 in 2022, remaining with KTM (team Ajo). So it wouldn&rsquo;t be too much of a stretch to see him in MotoGP in 2023. And the Austrian manufacturer won&rsquo;t want to lose this kind of rider, though many other teams are already showing a strong interest in him. The KTM strategy is nevertheless clear, and the manufacturer has many young and talented riders in its ranks right now. Binder and Oliveira should take heed, as the pressure is most definitely on.         The first two days of 2020 testing have seen MotoGP rookies Raul Fernandez and Remy Gardner, both of whom arrive from Moto2, climb aboard the KTM bikes of the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing team and start to get to grips with their new machines. Team manager Herv&eacute; Poncharal told motogp.com: &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had two incredibly intense test days. I want to thank both the riders for their commitment. I know they&rsquo;re coming off a long season and must be a little tired, but they showed real motivation during this first real MotoGP test.&rdquo; An encouraging start  The pair, who battled it out for the Moto2 title all the way to Valencia, are now team-mates once again, both making the best possible start in the top class according to Poncharal: &ldquo;They brought a really positive atmosphere and both put in an impressive performance, giving us some very interesting feedback&rdquo;. This was only a taster of what we can expect in 2022, when they will line up against the fastest riders in the world: &ldquo;I think they&rsquo;ve understood something about what they need to do to be quick with this bike and what they need to do to be physically in shape&rdquo;. The latest modifications  Poncharal continued on the theme of fitness: &ldquo;They both immediately realised that the upper part of the body needs to be a lot stronger to race in MotoGP, where there&rsquo;s greater speed and carbon brakes&rdquo;. Overall, the team manager is pleased: &ldquo;It was a very productive and interesting test, because they can now head into the winter break knowing what needs to be done in order to get to Sepang with clear ideas&rdquo;.&nbsp; Ace up their sleeve  In addition to the riders&rsquo; work, Poncharal also highlights the contribution made by KTM test rider Dani Pedrosa: &ldquo;I would like to thank Dani Pedrosa as well for his role as a test rider, but also as an adviser.         At the end of a long season and after many intense battles with team-mate Raul Fernandez, Remy Gardner was crowned Moto2 world champion at Valencia, finishing just a few points ahead of his rival. The Australian rider had a standout year with the Ajo team, winning five races and reaching the podium on seven further occasions, thus earning the trust of KTM, with whom he will move to MotoGP next year. Remy&rsquo;s feat is a significant one, particularly if we consider his surname, as he has managed to win the title just as his father Wayne did in 1987 (the reason he uses race number 87). Back then, Gardner scored the 500 title with seven race wins, but the two Australians are not the first to reach this shared father-son milestone. Roberts and Everts, in their fathers&rsquo; footsteps  Remaining with the world championship, the first family to do the &lsquo;double&rsquo; were the Roberts, with father Kenny winning three consecutive 500 world titles between 1978 and 1980 before Kenny Roberts Junior reached the top of the world in the same category twenty years later. In 2000, he lifted the trophy with Suzuki and remained the last rider to win with Suzuki until last year, when Joan Mir was able to earn the MotoGP title with the GSX-RR. Then, in the off-road world, we have the Everts family, father Harry a four-time world champion in the 70s and early 80, and son Stefan, a true motorcycling legend, with ten world titles scored between the 90s and 2007, the year in which he retired from racing. The Belgian rider was also the first rider to win with all four Japanese manufacturers, before taking up the role of MX sports manager for KTM. The Everts family may well be the first to become champions across three different generations, as young Liam (Stefan&rsquo;s son) will debut in MX2 next year.         The Portim&atilde;o track could be the stage on which Remy Gardner secures the championship to become Moto2 World Champion, if he can gain at least eight points on his Red Bull KTM Ajo team-mate. After crashing at Misano, Raul Fernandez has given him a hand in terms of the standings, turning the situation on its head, and the penultimate GP could prove decisive. An 18-point lead  Rookie Fernandez scored his first Moto2 win at this same Portim&atilde;o track back in April. After a top five and a first podium in Qatar, he surprised everyone by securing a victory that was not to be just a one-off. In fact he has gone on to score another six race wins but, despite a season run at the sharp end, three DNFs see him arrive at the penultimate round with an 18-point disadvantage. Quite a&nbsp;significant figure. Look out for the others  Managing the race will be anything but easy, because Gardner won&rsquo;t be his only rival. There&rsquo;s recent Misano race winner Sam Lowes, third-placed rider Marco Bezzecchi, but also Aron Canet and Augusto Fernandez, both looking for their first win of the season. Out with the team Tech3 KTM RC16 bikes were current Moto2 riders Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez, with Petrucci and Lecuona standing aside for the two new-entries.  A dream come true for Gardner and Fernandez   Before the test began, team manager Herv&eacute; Poncharal was sure to remove any pressure: &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t expect anything. It&rsquo;s just a shakedown, nothing more. When a Moto2 rider has their first MotoGP test at Jerez, day one is always spent finding the right set-up for the footpegs, handlebar, seat and riding position. Misano MotoGP test: KTM sends Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez out on track

The 2021 Moto2 season has begun and so far it&rsquo;s all about Sam Lowes, who scored the win from pole aboard the team Marc VDS Kalex. Behind him, Remy Gardner confirms that he&rsquo;s mature and, with a top team like Red Bull KTM Ajo, can fight at the front, as can Fabio Di Giannantonio, who celebrated a tearful podium after his first race with the team Gresini Kalex.  As for Marco Bezzecchi? Good, but perhaps not good enough. Meanwhile Spanish rookie Raul Fernandez made a strong start, fifth in his first race, as did Beaubier and Vietti. Disappointment for Manzi, and also Baldassarri and the MV Agusta.  Qatar report card   Sam Lowes: 10  A first-rate weekend for the Brit. In the top five right from Friday, he then set pole before dominating in the race. A crash in warm-up did nothing to deter him, Sam clearly one of the hot favourites for this year&rsquo;s title. Simply perfect.  Remy Gardner: 9  The Australian has started from where he left off in 2020, with a strong performance that finally confirms his maturity. One of few to lap with times similar to Lowes, his only mistake came in qualifying, where he failed to secure a front row start.  Fabio Di Giannantonio: 9  An incredible last lap saw Diggia beat Bezzecchi to the line and score a very emotional podium, in memory of Fausto of course. A pity about his tough qualifying session, but an excellent debut for the Italian aboard the Kalex  Raul Fernandez: 9  Having played a starring role all weekend, the Spaniard has immediately proved that he deserves his place in Moto2. Second in qualifying and fifth in his debut race. Clearly the &lsquo;chaos&rsquo; of Moto3 was not for him.  Marco Bezzecchi: 7  On paper, he looked to be the only rider able to keep pace with Lowes, but a drop in performance a few laps in saw him fighting for the third step of the podium, a battle he lost in the final stages. Good job anyway, but after the 2020 season finale, we expect a lot from &ldquo;Bez&rdquo;.  Cameron Beaubier and Celestino Vietti: 7  Two more rookies that stood out during their debut appearance in Moto2. Despite difficult qualifying sessions, both the five-time MotoAmerica champion and the Sky Racing Team rider went on to make great recoveries, closing just outside the top ten. Not bad, for their first time.  Stefano Manzi and Lorenzo Baldassarri: 4  The disappointments of the weekend. Stefano&rsquo;s move to the Sito Pons&rsquo; Kalex doesn&#39;t appear to have helped him, the rider closing 25 seconds from the front and outside the points zone. A disaster for Baldassarri, who struggled throughout his first weekend with MV Agusta, finishing with a crash. An uphill start for two great riders.
