For the first time in his career, Michael Van Der Mark will be forced to miss the opening round of the Superbike World Championship. The Dutchman has made the difficult decision in order to focus on making a full recovery ahead of round two, his home race, taking place at Assen on 23-24 April.  The BMW team has confirmed this in an official note on its social media channels, also revealing that Ukranian rider Ilya Mykhalchik will join Redding in the garage for this weekend&rsquo;s Arag&oacute;n round before flying to Le Mans for the Endurance World Championship season-opener. Mykhalchik already stood in for Van Der Mark during the Barcelona tests and is now participating in the official tests at Arag&oacute;n.  The BMW team&rsquo;s press note   The BMW Motorrad WorldSBK team has published this note on its social media channels: &ldquo;Injured Michael van der Mark has taken the decision to not participate in the 2022 season opener of WorldSBK at MotorLand Arag&oacute;n this coming weekend. The works rider for the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team had surgery last week on the leg fracture he suffered in a training accident with his mountain bike and now focuses on his full recovery. BMW Motorrad works rider Ilya Mikhalchik already stood in for van der Mark at the recent Barcelona test and will do again at the final tests and also the season opener&rdquo;.  Van Der Mark&rsquo;s words   The Dutchman had this to say: &ldquo;It has been a difficult decision but unfortunately I will not try to ride at MotorLand Arag&oacute;n. At this moment we have to be smart and stay calm because this is the only way forward in my recovery. The BMW squad is ready for its first test of the 2022 season at Misano, but there are already problems. The plan was to have all four riders on track, so factory team members Michael Van Der Mark and Scott Redding as well as satellite Bonovo riders Eugene Laverty and Loris Baz. But that plan has now changed.  The latest news is that Van Der Mark will not participate. The Dutchman was unfortunately involved in a mountain bike accident while training over the weekend and has sustained a leg fracture as a result.  Recovery time to be confirmed   &ldquo;In the next few days, as he receives treatment, we&rsquo;ll have more of an idea as to when Michael can return to the track&rdquo;, confirms BMW motorsport manager Marc Bongers, &quot;and, in the meantime, we wish him a very speedy recovery. We&rsquo;re in regular contact, but for now we need to wait&rdquo;.  A tough blow for Van Der Mark, ahead of what is set to be an important season for the Dutchman. The arrival of Scott Redding is likely to change the dynamic inside the official BMW team and starting in this way is definitely not what &ldquo;magic Michael&rdquo; would have wanted. WorldSBK, BMW loses parts: Van der Mark to miss Misano tests due to injury

Poor Michael Van Der Mark, what a dark weekend you had at Assen! Finally back at his home round (after the 2020 round was cancelled), the Dutch SMR BMW rider had more than a few problems during a weekend that brought ups and downs.  We were following local hero #60 closely. His round got off to a bad start when a technical problem put paid to his Friday morning. Having hit out - literally - at his M1000 RR, the Dutch rider clarified: &quot;I did that to check the bike&rsquo;s resistance and I can say that the front fairing is of really good quality&rdquo;.  Jokes aside, the former Supersport champion continued to work but there were more setbacks in store. He did in fact do rather well in race 1, finishing fourth, but the local rider clearly wanted to give the fantastic spectators more.  A crash without damage, luckily   Saturday night&rsquo;s storm required the intervention of the fire brigade, who did a wonderful job of drying the track. This done, it was time for the Superpole Race. VDM suffered a violent highside that saw him rolling in the wet grass all the way to a perimeter fence. The bike sustained limited damaged while the rider injured his leg.  But it could have been worse. And then, race 2. The Dutchman recovered well to finish sixth, not enough for one who was out for the podium. But despite it all, seeing him greet his local crowd will go down as one of the best moments of the 2021 season.  A more prolific past, a tough present, a brigher future   Not satisfied, but nevertheless happy. And yet, in the past he&rsquo;s almost always reached the podium, or come very close. In Supersport, he won the 2014 race, and the title that same season, riding a Honda Ten Kate 600. With the 1000, he scored further strong results with the Japanese manufacturer.  And the same with Yamaha. VDM rode the R1 M with great style, the flying dutchman of Van Drenthe. Once the races were over, Michael spoke with the spectators: &quot;I said hi to the fans and thanked them for coming. We&rsquo;re nothing and nobody without the fans&rdquo;. He added: &ldquo;It didn&rsquo;t go as I&rsquo;d hoped, which means I&rsquo;ll have to improve next time out&rdquo;. How is it that despite a less than shining scorecard, Nordic riders complain less and are more constructive than those of latin temperament?         The British WorldSBK race weekend at the spectacular Donington Park track was interesting for a number of reasons. While, on the one hand, the title fight is now back on, thanks Razgatlioglu&rsquo;s trumphant weekend as well as Rea&rsquo;s crash, on the other hand BMW showed to be more competitive than ever in the tricky race conditions, both factory riders reaching the podium. Aboard the German manufacturer&rsquo;s new M1000RR, both Tom Sykes and Michael Van Der Mark proved very fast over the flying lap (both qualifying on the front row) but also in terms of race pace, the pair reaching the podium in the Superpole Race, and the 2013 world champion on the third step of the rostrum in race 2. A favourable track or real growth?  Although BMW can be very pleased with the weekend&rsquo;s excellent results, it&rsquo;s only right that they keep their feet on the ground. The Donington Park circuit is undoubtedly favourable for both Sykes and Van Der Mark, the two riders having won at the English circuit in the past, and so the German manufacturer should be under no illusions. At the same time, this was the factory BMW team's best weekend since it returned to Superbike and it&rsquo;s clear that the M1000RR represents a big step forward in terms of competitiveness compared to the &ldquo;old&rdquo; S1000RR. The strong Donington weekend shouldn&rsquo;t be an end point though, but rather a base on which to build to consistently run at the front along with Kawasaki, Yamaha and Ducati.         A nice scene between the Pata Yamaha and BMW Motorrad teams in which Michael Van Der Mark takes centre stage. The Dutchman is now a BMW rider but was part of Paul Denning&rsquo;s squad until last year. The rider infiltrated the Yamaha garage to celebrate the result of his former team-mate Razgatlioglu. The episode was documented by the Yamaha team itself, with a photo posted on the team&rsquo;s social media channels that portrays the Dutchman as the party&rsquo;s &ldquo;gatecrasher&rdquo;, with a caption reading: &ldquo;Calling the BMW Motorrad team, your rider Michael Van Der Mark is lost&rdquo;. UK WorldSBK: Van Der Mark “infiltrates” the Yamaha party

        Michael Van Der Mark is the latest factory BMW hire. The Dutch rider has talked to WorldSBK about the upcoming season, and the first question was: why the move from Yamaha to BMW? Michael replies: &ldquo;The decision wasn&rsquo;t easy, but the main reason is the new M1000 RR. Already the S 1000 RR had a lot of potential, but the M should be a lot better. This is the reason why I chose to change manufacturer". The news broke during the 2020 season, coming almost like a bolt out of the blue. Magic Michael outlines what happened: "Normally you speak with different teams during race weekends but I spoke with BMW when we were all in lockdown. It wasn&rsquo;t really a difficult decision for me in the end, even though I couldn&rsquo;t look at the results of other riders because we were just stuck at home.&rdquo; After initial contact between the parties at Estoril last autumn, the first shakedown took place in France. At the Miramas track, VDM was able to test his winged steed: &ldquo;I think one of the biggest changes is the wings on the bike. I&rsquo;ve been riding with and without them. You have to get a feeling with them and use them before you can really judge it. I think it&rsquo;s really positive&rdquo;. Team Motorrad BMW SBK: a lot of work to do with Van Der Mark  The Dutchman is well aware of this and there&rsquo;s much to do before the SBK championship even gets underway. Some of the details need work: &ldquo;the Miramas track is quite small so it was difficult to get the perfect feeling with the bike, but we changed the handlebars, the seat, things like that&rdquo;. It is important to adapt to the M1000 RR. The former Supersport world champion knows this: "I can be really aggressive and I can be really smooth. We&rsquo;ll need consistency. One thing the bike needs to do really well is stop because I like to brake late. The Yamaha stops really well, which is something we have to improve on the BMW, but the BMW turns more tightly than the Yamaha.
