The world championship will not race in the Czech Republic in 2021, as confirmed by the mayor of Brno, Markéta Vanková.

Excessive costs

"I have to say I’m very sorry about the decision, because it means that there’ll be no race in 2021, and for one simple reason. We just don’t have the funds to fully repair the track, as requested by Dorna”, states the mayor.

As reported by some local sources, it would take roughly four million Euro to modernise the structure and resurface the track.

“On our side, it would be plausible to pay for this work if there were the prospect of another five years, but with Dorna asking for nine million Euro per year, that’s unacceptable for us in the current situation”, continues Vanková.

Difficult to imagine a return in coming seasons

The mayor laments the lack of help from local bodies: “Up until now we’ve received no money from the state”. It remains to be seen whether Dorna will still expect the registration fee for 2021: “We believe we will not have to pay the sum requested for next season".

It’s hard to imagine MotoGP will return to Brno in future: "Once a tradition is broken, it’s hard to go back" commented Petr Bohác, a spokesperson for the circuit.

Three replacement tracks in the running

The Czech GP was not included on the recently released provisional calendar, leaving a gap in the schedule. In the running to replace Brno are Portugal, Russia and Indonesia.
