MotoGP, Chicho Lorenzo is certain: “the title will depend more on KTM than on its riders”

Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso, followed by Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez and, most recently, Davide Brivio. In recent weeks, several MotoGP names have come under the scrutiny of Chicho Lorenzo, Jorge Lorenzo’s father, who is gaining popularity with his Youtube channel “Motogepeando”.

His latest comments relate to KTM, but also Danilo Petrucci. Is the new Tech3 KTM rider in for Chicho’s praise?

Jorge’s father starts by analysing the KTM situation, referring to the Austrian manufacturer as “the brand that surprised us the most last season”. But the real question is: “Will they be able to develop their prototype to the point of being able to win the world title?”

“Winning a championship - muses Chicho - will depend a lot more on KTM than on its riders. They are really evolving and closing in on the Japanese”.

And as for riders, 2021 will see the orange brand counting on Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira on the factory team, and Iker Lecuona and Danilo Petrucci in the Tech 3 garage.

Chicho Lorenzo considers each in turn: “Binder has a similar personality to test rider Kallio, he’s quick and has shown that he can win. Miguel Oliveira has lifted the weight of never having won a race by winning two. It would be great to see him fighting for the title in Portugal. Iker Lecuona has come to MotoGP very quickly and needs to take things slowly”. And Danilo Petrucci? “He’s a very inconsistent rider, despite having been able to score some great results”.

So who can “save” KTM, or rather enable them to achieve even more solid results? Chicho Lorenzo has no doubts: “Test rider Dani Pedrosa is ideal - he concludes - because he’s a technical rider and that’s what KTM needs. He has many years of experience and his size and weight mean that he knows how to balance the bike and really understand it”.
