The Turkish rider has shared an image on social media that shows the consequences of his crash through the last turn at Jerez
It could have been a great Sunday for Deniz Oncu, considering his performance over a good part of the Moto3 race at Jerez. And yet it came to a bitter end for the number 53 rider, although the consequences could have been much worse.
Having led for most of the race, Oncu was passed by Pedro Acosta and Jaume Masia on the last lap. He then tried to make up the lost ground by braking hard at the final corner, but the consequences were disastrous. Oncu fell and caused Masia to crash too, while also involving Darryn Binder. The three finished the race, but without scoring any points.
As the KTM rider commented hours after the race, the crash could have been much worse. “I’m lucky to be alive. When Binder passed over my head, his front disc cut my neck”, writes Deniz on Instagram alongside a picture of the incident. "It could have been much worse!"
Lastly, Oncu apologised to his rivals for involving them in the accident: "It was an incredible race, I gave 100% on every lap. I struggled at the start, but then got into my rhythm. At the same time, I want to apologise to Masia and Binder for putting an end to their race".
