MotoGP Italy, Rossi: “My last GP at Mugello? I don’t want to think about it”

The Italian GP is always a magical moment for local riders and even more so for Valentino Rossi who has run 27 races at Mugello. This could be his last race at the track but Vale doesn’t want to think about that: “I can’t think it’s my last, for me this is my 27th race here and it’s great to see that I feel the same passion as I did the first time. I just want to have fun”.

On the speed at Mugello

“This weekend will be important - explains the Doctor - Mugello is a special place for all bike fans and it’s been home to the Italian GP for thirty years. It was great to see it again yesterday, the hills, the paddock, it’s incredible. We improved a little at Le Mans but conditions were difficult, we’ll see what my speed’s like over the weekend”.

And talking of speed, he mentions the fact that some bikes could even beat the speed record set by Zarco in Qatar: The speed here is impressive, and I think some might be quicker than they were in Qatar even. The “jump” with braking at San Donato is the most impressive point of the championship. It’s not easy, but it’s great”.

But could all this speed make for a track that is less safe? “The most important thing is to continue to work on the run-off areas as the bikes are very fast. At Jerez and Mugello there are some slightly dangerous points, we need to push to improve the run-off areas”.

Deciding re his future

During the conference, Valentino also talked about his future, a hot topic right now: “We’re heading into an important phase of the championship with four races in five weeks. We have Mugello, then Barcelona and Assen and then without Finland we have a month’s break. During that period everyone will start thinking about 2022, and so I’ll make my decision, but it’s also a decision that involves Petronas and Yamaha”.

But is the fact that the public could return to Mugello next year a reason to continue? “No, the public is not a reason to continue. It’s special with the fans here but if I want to see the fans I can just come to watch the race. It’s hard to continue for that reason alone. For next year, in terms of Team VR46, we are talking with Ducati and Yamaha and I think we’ll have news in ten days or so”.
