MotoGP Germany, Miller firm re penalties: “Rules are rules”

The Australian rider has shown to be in favour of the penalties Race Direction handed out during the last race, but also in general: “I don’t think anyone loves the referee but there has to be one”

After finishing third at the Catalunya GP, Jack Miller is keen to do well in Germany too. A track that isn’t among Ducati's favourites but, as the rider says, never say never. The Sachsenring may well have some surprises in store

A track that could surprise

Commenting during the press conference, Jack Miller admits: “This track is special for me. I had one of my best Moto3 races here while I’ve had highs and lows in MotoGP. The circuit is fun anyway, it has its quirks. Unlike other tracks that resemble each other, this one is different which is what makes it great. I’m excited to race here. In 2019 we had a battle with Dovizioso and Petrucci and I’m keen to experience this track with the 2021 factory Ducati package. The weather forecast looks great all weekend, what more could we want?”

So Miller is not worried that this is not the most favourable track for the Ducati: “That might be the case, but it doesn’t mean we can’t put in a good weekend’s work. The turns are similar to other tracks and there aren't too many changes of direction, not like Assen for example, so we have two different elements between this weekend and next, and I can’t wait to see whether the bike will handle it. It’ll be better than 2019 at least. Sure, certain tracks might not be ideal for the Ducati but we need to turn them into tracks that are good for Ducati".

Joking aside...

The riders in attendance at the conference were asked about the penalty Quartararo received at the Catalunya GP: “At the end of the day his leathers were undone, so they needed to make an immediate decision. It took three hours, but it’s Race Direction so we can’t say anything. I don’t think anyone loves the referee but there needs to be one. If had happened before, the same would have applied, if you go to the Safety Commission you know what’s happening. We too have wanted rules that are now applied, we’re racing increasingly fast and wide and the track becomes less safe. Like the chicanes, before there was gravel and no one went there but they do now. Rules are rules, no one loves the work of the referee, we could all do better, but there needs to be someone playing the part of the baddy”.

"We’ll think about it when the time comes"

Lastly, Miller comments on the trio of Ducati riders who are doing well so far this season, Zarco and Bagnaia in addition to himself of course. Could this be a problem when the title fight heats up? “I think the stronger Ducati is, the better it is for us. The championship is long and if you can be the rider who has more chance of support, even better. You need to try and be that rider. Just as the other manufacturers do. With Pecco too, there are tracks where he’ll be quicker and others where it’ll be me, but it’s all good”.
