MotoGP, Dall'Igna looks to 2022: “New elements on track from October”

The Director of Ducati Corse has analysed the strengths and weaknesses of the Desmosedici: “The speed? We need more”

The Ducati commitment to create a bike that can beat its rivals and achieve a world title that it hasn’t seen for years continues. But the innovative work regarding the frame and aerodynamics is in constant turmoil, while the top speed of the Desmosedici has become another key issue. High? Yes, but not high enough.

Engineer Luigi Dall'Igna talks about the developments and looks ahead to 2022 during an interview for MotoGP.com.

“We’re still lacking speed”

“I’m really pleased with the work my technicians have done over the winter – he comments – because we’ve been able to improve the engine, even if development was frozen. We’ve also been able to find some areas for improvement that are permitted by the regulation and we’ve also worked hard on the frame. We need to continue to improve and not only in terms of the frame, but also the engine, if possible, with a view to upcoming races”. Dall'Igna says it how it is: “As you know, the bike doesn’t turn as we want, so that’s another aspect on which we need to work”.

An example to follow

But the research carried out in Borgo Panigale has ensured that the holeshot, for example, becomes a bind for the entire grid: “it offers an advantage of course, or our riders wouldn’t use it! But the rules are very strict and we can only use a mechanical system and not an electronic one. At some tracks, using it can make the difference”.

2022 is already here

Lastly, Dall'Igna touches on 2022: “It’s time to think about the future and 2022. We’re currently working on this in the Borgo Panigale race department. Then, in October, we’ll start to bring something to the track. I can’t talk about that of course, but it will definitely be important to continue with our development, to think outside the box and create something new”.
