MotoGP, Fabio Quartararo not in for an easy time in Austria

The action is set to resume at a track that is favourable to Ducati and KTM, but the championship leader will try to defy expectation with the Yamaha

Of the six races held to date at the Red Bull Ring, five have been won by the Ducati Desmosedici GP and one by Miguel Oliveira aboard the KTM. He is the only current rider to have triumphed at the Austrian track in fact, rounding out the 2020 season with three podiums, one of which a win. The Portuguese rider may well be the man to beat at the Red Bull Ring, and he’ll be further spurred on by the fact he’s competing in the Austrian manufacturer’s home round.

A tough track for Yamaha

Until now, Yamaha has only reached the podium in 2016, when Jorge Lorenzo crossed the line third. But championship leader Fabio Quartararo will be looking to rewrite the history books in this regard. Valentino Rossi finished fourth in 2016 and 2019 and fifth last year, while the Frenchman scored an eighth and a thirteenth place. It is up to them, and Maverick Vinales, to try to improve, while Cal Crutchlow will take part in his first race with the M1, standing in for injured Franco Morbidelli.

As for Ducati…

Will it be Johann Zarco or Pecco Bagnaia’s time to shine? The two Borgo Panigale frontrunners know they have a great opportunity to score that first MotoGP win and breathe down Quartararo’s neck. Without forgetting Jack Miller, who has already won two races this year and could find himself up at the sharp once more. And let’s not underestimate current world champion Joan Mir; he lies fourth right now and has always had good feeling with the Suzuki around the Austrian track.
