The riders who have died in the last ten years in the world of motorcycling have largely been hit by other riders. We remember Marco Simoncelli, on 23 October 2011, all the way to the most recent Jason Dupasquier in the world championship, on 30 May, without forgetting Hugo Millán in the CEV. This has pushed the FIM, Dorna and the organisers of other series including the CEV and the Red Bull Rookies Cup to come together in order to study a model with which to reduce the chances of a fatal accident on track.

This, the hypothetical "solution"

As reported by Spanish website Marca.com, drastic measures are soon to be taken in Moto3 and, in the not too distant future, technical tools with which to combat the issue will be identified. FIM president, Jorge Viegas, comments: “Both Dorna and us are worried. We are looking at everything we can do to reduce the risk. I can confirm that we are working together to make some decisions in the near future”.

The thinking centres around one key aspect: One thing we can already do is reduce the number of riders by half, in both practices and races. This is the easiest measure to implement. If there are twenty riders instead of forty, the probabilities are a lot less, although the risk cannot be totally removed. This could be possible already at the next races. Other solutions have to do with the electronics or tyres, we’ll see. We’re working on it”.

As for the practicalities, Viegas proposes: We’d have two practice heats and then a race for the first twenty, while the others run another race. The only way to reduce the risk is to reduce the number of riders on track. We’re working on it”.
