MotoGP: Marc Marquez vs Jett Lawrence - the battle is on at Austin

On Wednesday 29 September, before the Austin GP, the Honda rider and the AMA Pro Motocross 250 MX champion Jett Lawrence will go head-to-head with an NSF100... who will come out on top?

As we wait to see the riders out on track at Austin, one of them has an additional challenge to face. Marc Marquez, the King of Texas, has amassed six wins at Austin, which makes him the most successful rider at this track, but the challenge he now faces might just see him ‘dethroned’. The Spaniard will in fact be taking on young champion Jett Lawrence, aboard a Honda NSF100.

A winning track for Marquez

If there’s one track that holds no secrets for Marc Marquez, aside from the Sachsenring, then it’s Austin. The Spaniard is hailed by the spectators every time the championship lands in Texas, and for good reason. Since 2013, when the GP of the Americas first appeared on the MotoGP calendar, Marquez has won six times. The only year he didn’t cross the line first (and considering that there was no race in 2020 due to Covid-19) was in 2019 when he was leading the race by a significant margin but then crashed, handing the win to Alex Rins as a result.

The gauntlet is thrown

This year, despite his arm issues, he’ll try to do it again but before we see him back in the saddle of his RC213V, on Wednesday 29 September Marc will take on AMA Pro Motocross 250 MX champion Jett Lawrence. The challenge will involve a timed test at Austin, the two riders on track with an NSF100. The young American rider lay down the gauntlet with an Instagram post showing the leathers the number #18 rider will be wearing and the caption: “This is what Marquez will be seeing when we race”. The Spaniard was quick to respond with a smiley face emoji. May the battle begin!
