Losail, when F1 and MotoGP make for complicated bedfellows

Before Formula 1 heads to Qatar, the track will be modified to accommodate the single seaters, which raises questions about the feasibility of hosting MotoGP and Formula 1 at the same tracks

The Losail track, a permanent fixture on the MotoGP calendar since 2004, prepares for an important challenge, in that it will soon host F1 for the first time, replacing the Australian round. This opens the doors for a more long-term collaboration, which will see Doha feature on the calendar from 2023 to 2033.

The FIA outlines the work

As a brand-new host, the Qatari track needs to make the necessary arrangements in order to be able to welcome the four-wheelers. This will be the first time that F1 visits a track designed for bikes, and not the other way around.

“The entry onto pitlane will change completely – states F1 Race Director Michael Masi  – That’s almost finished in fact, as are all the other things”.

Masi continues: “This is essentially a motorcycle track, that’s why it features double kerbs and ‘sausages’ to prevent the cutting of corners. Significant changes will also be made to the barriers so that they meet F1 safety standards”.

“The biggest change is to the pitlane entry, because the paddock space and number of garages is already adequate for F1” he concludes.

Danger of dips

This means that Losail will become yet another circuit at which F1 and MotoGP must coexist, something the world championship riders may not be happy about as, over time, there is always a risk of a repeat situations seen elsewhere, where the enormous aerodynamic load generated by the single seaters created troublesome bumps for the riders.

Something that makes it tricky for the two categories to coexist at the same tracks and that, in our opinion, should be carefully controlled in order to guarantee the necessary MotoGP safety standards.
