The Portimao track marked the world championship’s return to Europe, and now the circus moves on to Jerez for round six. The Andalusian track has hosted the Spanish GP since 1989 and is therefore one of the most featured circuits on the championship calendar. There’s everything to play for in the reigning class, a symptom of a very balanced and unpredictable championship.

Many riders are likely to be fighting to the podium, from Fabio Quartararo, fresh from his latest win and the victor at Jerez in 2020, to Jack Miller, who triumphed last year ahead of Pecco Bagnaia and Franco Morbidelli. Without forgetting Marc Marquez, who has won at the Spanish track three times, beating Valentino Rossi and Daniel Pedrosa in 2014, triumphing over Johann Zarco and Andrea Dovizioso in 2018, and finishing ahead of Alex Rins and Maverick Vinales in 2019.

Valentino Rossi 7-time winner in the top class

The rider best able to interpret the technical Spanish track (considering only the reigning class) has been Valentino Rossi, who has won at Jerez on seven occasions. 2001 to 2003 brought three consecutive victories, followed by that of 2005 when Rossi beat Sete Gibernau at the end of an intense duel that came to a head with the famous "shove". The nine-time champion was back on top in 2007 and 2009, before winning for the last time in 2016, when he got the better of Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez.

Four Spaniards behind Mick Doohan

Rossi is followed in this special classification by Mick Doohan, a four-time winner at Jerez, in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1996. The Australian champion precedes a high-quality Spanish quartet as, with three wins apiece, we have Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo, Daniel Pedrosa and Alex Criville. The Majorcan won in 2010 in front of Daniel Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi, in 2011 ahead of Daniel Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden and in 2015 in front of Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi.

The Sabadell native also won on three occasions, in 2008, when he beat Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, in 2013, over Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo and lastly in 2017, in a repeat of the same podium. Alex Criville also did the treble, with no rivals at his home track between 1997 and 1999. Also of note are Fabio Quartararo’s two wins in 2020 (the Spanish and Andalusian races), Sete Gibernau’s win in 2004 and the victories of Loris Capirossi and Casey Stoner in 2006 and 2012 respectively.
