Hungary is dreaming big. The Hungaroring, the stage for the F1 until 2027, also wants to host the MotoGP in the near future.

Hungaroring, F1 and MotoGP together

In the last few days, the circuit has in fact announced a change of ownership, now belonging to the State Department for Sport, which is part of the Hungarian Defense Department.

Thanks to this change of ownership, the Hungaroring will now undergo important maintenance work as of July 2023. The planned work includes a new pitlane and an updated control tower and media centre as well as a new main entrance.

The renovations will be completed in phases between one F1 event and the next, with the work expected to be completed ahead of the 2026 race.

Hungaroring: a ‘return’ to MotoGP?

The Government has stated that it is aiming to raise the track to the standards required for MotoGP, doing away with the previous project that would have seen world championship races play out at the new track of Debrecen.

This would not be a true first appearance for the Hungaroring on the two-wheeled calendar, as the Hungarian track already hosted the world championship in 1990, when Loris Capirossi won in the 125 class, John Kocinski in 250 and Mick Doohan in 500, and in 1992, when the winners were Alessandro Gramigni (125), Luca Cadalora (250) and Eddie Lawson with the legendary Cagiva (500).

Here below, a video outlining the scheduled restructuring works.
