Storm Eunice has become the first star of the 2022 British GP. With the paddock closed and buildings damaged, the race weekend may not run as planned

It already happened back in 2020, when Matterley Basin opened the world championship season and strong winds swept the track and paddock, demolishing a good part of the infrastructure and forcing organisers to cancel Saturday’s action and move it all to Sunday.

And the same thing may occur this year, seeing as storm Eunice is moving across Wales and central/south English with gusts of wind of up to 150 km/h and doesn’t seem to be letting up, meaning that staff are unable to prepare the track or paddock structures.

It’s red alert for the MXGP

England and Wales have prepared for what is looking to be one of the worst storms in recent decades, with millions of people having been told to stay at home so as to avoid winds of up to 150 km/h. Even the army has been put on alert, while ministers and officials will meet this afternoon to assess the effects of the storm. The entire area is on red alert, the highest level there is, one that indicates a danger to life.

Everything on stand-by

For now, no one can access the paddock and the distribution of permanent passes has been suspended, as has all press room activity, as staff wait for the conditions to improve. Those who entered the paddock yesterday with their trucks are battling the wind, trying to minimise any structural damage. While some have disassembled their tents or were yet to begin set-up, certain structures have sustained damaged this morning. More updates will follow as we find out more.
