It was already looking likely and now it’s official – bikes will no longer compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado. The organisers of the famous American hill climb have confirmed the news, having decided that bikes will no longer be permitted to take part in the event following the 2019 incident.

During the last edition, Carlin Dunne tragically lost his life while competing in the "Race to the Clouds". Riding the Ducati, he was just a few metres from the line and outright victory, the win ultimately going to his friend and rival Rennie Scaysbrook on the Aprilia. Scaysbrook’s track record will therefore remain unbeaten.

The organiser’s comment

The chairman of the event’s board, Fred Veitch, comments: "Motorcycle competition has been part of the history of the race off-and-on since 1916, and has been both thrilling and tragic for competitors and fans alike. This has been a long process and a difficult decision, but we believe it is the right decision and one that is in the best interest of the organization at this time”.
