A photo finish is not enough: both riders win in the BTC at Donington

An incredible sight in the British Talent Cup, where a race to the line resulted in a dead heat and two young talents on the top step of the rostrum – here’s what happened

The third British Superbike round played out at Donington Park last weekend. The supporting categories include the British Talent Cup, a Honda single-brand series created by Dorna for up-and-coming British talent. And it was the BTC race that offered spectators a unique sight last weekend, so what happened?

Two winners of a single race

Considering that the bikes are all the same in terms of performance, we often see very close finished in the various Talent Cup races. But this time, there was no clear outcome, with Carter Brown and Johnny Garness both finishing race 2 at precisely the same moment.

Even a photo finish was unable to separate them and, having crossed the line together, both were declared winners, with Brown and Garness each scoring 25 points and taking to the top step of the rostrum together. And what’s even more strange is that the two winners are also team-mates, competing for Michael Laverty’s MLav VisionTrack Academy team.

The 2004 Losail precedent: same result, different outcome

There have been countless close finishes in the history of motorcycling, but the only precedent whereby two riders crossed the finish line together dates back to 2004, at Losail. In the 125 race, Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso could not be separated in a photo finish but, contrary to what happened last weekend at Donington, the win was awarded to the Spaniard as it was he who had set the fastest lap.
