MotoAmerica: the championship standings after the New Jersey round

Following on from his Race 2 win, Danilo Petrucci has again closed in on leader Gagne. Here, the situation prior to the final round

The latest MotoAmerica race weekend in New Jersey has ensured the championship remains open, with Jake Gagne winning in Race 1 and Danilo Petrucci dominating in a wet Race 2. One win apiece that confirms just how evenly matched the two title contenders really are, separated by just four points in favour of the current Yamaha champion, and with only one round still to run.

The grand finale will play out over the weekend of 23-25 September at the Barber Motorsports Park, in Alabama, where unstable weather may again play an important role and where Danilo has already ridden, during a test in May. The final weekend will also establish who finishes third overall, with the two South Africans Cameron Petersen and Mathew Scholtz separated by 17 points with 50 still to play for.

The standings prior to the last round

Here is the championship situation after New Jersey, with just two races in Alabama still to run:

2) Danilo Petrucci (Ducati) - 327

3) Cameron Petersen (Yamaha) - 272

4) Mathew Scholtz (Yamaha) - 255

5) Hector Barbera (BMW) - 173
