A few days into the 2023 Dakar and one of the big surprises at the top of the standings is clearly Mason Klein. Just 21 years old and competing in the RallyGP class for the first time, the American has already won stage 2 and now lies a little over four minutes from overall leader Daniel Sanders.

After having scored the 2022 Rally Raid world title by winning every race on the calendar (and finishing the Dakar ninth overall), the team BAS Dakar rider has quickly become one of the contenders for this year’s win. And there is one thing that sets him apart from his closest rivals, in that he in fact prefers to start ahead of everybody else, something that is generally considered a disadvantage considering the time a rider loses having no tracks to follow.

Klein: “I make less mistakes when I start first”

After winning the second stage with his KTM, Mason started first in stage three and was still able to finish third, now lying just four minutes from Sanders in the general standings: “I loved every moment of this stage, I really liked starting first. I enjoyed the scenery, the route and made less mistakes than I expected. Thanks to the bonus given to those who start first, it’s not a disadvantage, in fact I think I navigated better than usual.”
