One factor that makes the Rally Raid world, and particularly the Dakar, so special is undoubtedly the sporting spirit for which all its riders stand out. And we saw a shining example of this “Dakarian spirit” yesterday, during stage four, at the hands of Chilean rider Josè Ignacio Cornejo Florimo.

The factory HRC rider was the first to cross the 90 km mark after Portuguese rider Joaquim Rodrigues suffered an accident. He immediately got off his bike and helped his rival while awaiting the medics and helicopter that would then transport the injured athlete to hospital in Ha'Il. A gesture that of course compromised Cornejo’s own stage, despite seven minutes being given back to him, which allowed him to round out the day inside the top ten.

Cornejo: “Happy to have helped Joaquim”

I was going strong but when I reached the 90 km mark I saw Joaquim Rodrigues on the ground and I immediately stopped”, explains Ignacio. “He’d had a bad crash, I had to call the medics and wait for them to arrive. I really struggled to get back into a rhythm when I resumed the race, but I’m happy I helped him, because this is the spirit of the Dakar”.
