Dominique will go to Indonesia as title holder to bid farewell to a category that is about to undergo a regulation change: next year will see bike/rider weight ratios come into play

Dominique Aegerter is the new 2021 champion in a Supersport category that has now run its last season under the current regulation, rules that have been in force since 1997 when the intermediate class was known as the World Series.

The Swiss rider and the Yamaha Ten Kate team are untouchable now, having already lifted the trophy in Argentina, but they are keen to improve on their race win tally, why stop at 10 when you can score 12, which is better?!

However the Indonesian races play out, #77 will be remembered as the champion who rounds out a “classic” era, known as the "600", in reference to the most common engine size on the grid. In reality, with twins of up to 750 cc and 675 cc three-cylinders, the championship has never been truly homogeneous, but the advent of the Ducati Panigale 955 V2, MV Agusta 800 and Triumph 765 is about to revolutionise a series that’s gone unchanged for years.

Future regulation to be released during EICMA: in pursuit of balance

The rumours suggest that an official draft of the regulation will be issued during next week's Milan Motorcycle Show. This may or may not be true but in the meantime, there is talk of concessions for the 600 cc four-cylinder bikes, so the Yamahas and Kawasakis, unless Honda also decides to compete with its CBR.

The R6 and ZX-6R may mount racing brakes, possibly Brembo, and remove the standard units. The addition of the rear pump activated by the left handlebar is another option, as is ride by wire for the Ninja and a dedicated gear blipper. Engine preparation will remain unchanged and untouchable. So the substance remains the same, but will this be enough to deal with the arrival of the "hyped" Ducati, MV Agusta and Triumph?

The Bolognese twin will likely be limited to a maximum number of three engines per season, with throttle valve opening limits and the possibility to purchase a kit with which to exploit certain details. The ideas for the Italian and English three-cylinder bikes are similar to the current 600s. In general, bike/rider weight ratios will be calculated, with tables into which values must fall – this with a view to evening out the performance.

Odendaal or Gonzalez, who will be runner-up?

Steven with Evan Bros and Manuel with ParkinGo are both fighting for second place in the championship, although the South African currently leads the way. The 313 points scored so far, thanks also to five race wins and five podiums, put Odendaal in a very strong position, but it’s not yet over just yet.

Gonzalez is on 275 points, and there are 50 up for grabs. Both the silver and bronze medal positions are up for grabs, and the Spaniard will also have to defend himself from Jules Cluzel and Philipp Oettl, lying in joint fourth place with 241 points each.

Competing for the VFT Racing team, Federico Caricasulo will also have the chance to improve his overall position in the standings. With no Luca Bernardi on the grid, the Italian might be able to move into seventh position.
