WorldSBK, Lecuona: “The Honda isn’t ready to win, but we can grow together”

"There are differences between the Superbikes and the MotoGP bikes, so I need to go over many things. Being on a factory team is something new, but I like it. My finger? I’ll be back on the bike in a week"

On the day Honda presented its 2022 season, the factory Superbike team was also on hand, ready to seek redemption with its two new riders, Xavi Vierge and Iker Lecuona. The former KTM rider is undoubtedly an interesting prospect, despite the initial difficulties, and one who should be closely monitored.

“I immediately realised that the Superbikes are very different to the MotoGP bikes – comments Iker – and so I need to adapt to many changes. The tyres for example, as the Pirellis tend to lose grip quickly and then slide even along the straight. My main aim during the next test will be to put together as many laps as possible.

Many make the switch between MotoGP and SBK but few fully exploit it.

“I’m one of the youngest riders on the grid, so the first goal is to learn all about the category in as little time as possible. In MotoGP you really use the electronics for example, while it’s very different in Superbike, but I can count on solid potential and the fact I know various tracks”.

Lecuona: “I’m finding out what it means to be a factory rider”

As he leaves the past behind, there may be an element of surprise to Lecuona’s future, though the rider is aware the Honda’s current potential.

“Right now, the bike is not one of those that can win the title, but both Xavi (Vierge) and I can help it grow. Firstly, we need to adapt to its requirements and then, personally speaking, I will focus on improving and giving it my all. I’m in for a challenging season that’s for sure, with no shortage of races, considering Superbike involves three per weekend”.

The Spaniard can count on a factory team for the first time, something that brings both positives and negatives.

“At Honda I’m really finding out what it means to be a factory rider. At KTM I only had the support of the factory team, while now it’s great to have so many people listening to me when I get off the bike and come into the garage. It’s strange, something I’ve not experienced before”.

Iker finishes by touching on the aforementioned test, set to take place at the end of January when he’ll return to the track for the first time since fracturing his little finger in December.

“I feel better day after day, and in a week I’ll be able to get back on the bike and resume my training. Over the holidays, I tried to stay as fit as possible, so that I’m ready for the tests and my first commitments”.
